Where can they
go?
When he
approaches the path to the Gods it points out that the bark is still at the
same spot. Without hesitating he drives the stallion into the sea until the
ground disappears under its hoofs. Then Tork slides into the water while Barg swims
towards him.
He fights a way
through the water and is almost at the ship when a rope ladder rolls down the hull.
Tork grabs, waits for the dog and hoists it around his shoulders to climb
upwards hand over hand where he is welcomed by the horrible sea creature.
- ‘Do you have
the crown?’ Tork nods and the creature grins.
- ‘Welcome
aboard.’
On the deck
Tork turns around. Along the coast, at a safe distance from the water, the
farmers drive their horses together. Sometimes one of them rises cursing a fist
and gesticulates angry in his direction.

Waar moeten ze heen?
Wanneer ze het Godenpad naderen blijkt dat de bark
nog altijd op dezelfde plaats ligt. Zonder bedenken drijft hij de hengst in zee
tot de grond onder zijn hoeven verdwijnt. Dan laat Tork zich in het water
glijden terwijl Barg naar hem toe zwemt.
Hij vecht zich een weg door het water en is bijna
bij het schip wanneer een touwladder langs de romp omlaag rolt. Tork grijpt
zich vast, wacht op de hond en hijst hem rond de schouders om vervolgens hand
over hand omhoog te klimmen waar hij wordt opgewacht door het afzichtelijke
zeewezen.
- ‘Heb je de kroon?’ Tork knikt en het wezen
grijnst.
- ‘Welkom aan boord.’
Op het dek draait Tork zich om. Langs de oever, op
veilige afstand van het water, drijven de boeren hun paarden samen. Af en toe
steekt er een scheldend de vuist op en gebaart driftig in zijn richting.
