Wolder under a dark sky

The rain stopped, but the clouds did not want to leave yet. These Dutch skies give a special effect, already the painters of the Golden Age knew this. Fuzzy and diffuse, mysterious sometimes, which makes the wildflowers even more attractive, and the cattle in the meadows more wonderful. For the best result go to YouTube: Wolder under a grey sky

dripping border walk

Under a constant dripping sky, not real rain, and dark clouds, I explored the Dutch-Belgian border once more, and saw the green has become full grown, like summerish… Walked along this side, turned in Veldwezelt (Belgium) and walked back over Vroenhoven to see all the beautiful flora of the area. Andalucia trips

For 10 years I lived in Spain, the most southern part: Andalucia; more precise: in the Malaga province and not far from the touristic Costa del Sol. Wonderful years, in a wonderful environment and in between this easy attitude which the people here have. In those years I saw a lot, discovered a lot, and this compilation is what is left of these discovers. For YouTube go to: Andalucia trips

Rain was promised; thunder & lightning, so I took an early walk, but nothing happened; just a threatening sky, while I walked through Wolder, over Susserweg and through the field, taking snapshots of all what looked interesting today. Happy viewing. YouTube, see: before the showers

Campagne, Biesland, Wolder

3 urbanizations of Maastricht, near to the Belgian border in the south part of the town. One of the most green urban areas in the Netherlands. Only Campagne is built at the end of last century, the other two are former villages, came to Maastricht during the "all-has-to-become-bigger" policy, while a very intelligent Archimedes once said: "If someone shouts for help in the town center, and will not be heard at the gate, that town is too big" For YouTube result: Campagne, Biesland, Wolder

from Kultuur-Fabriek

Not just a walk home, but with a mission. I visited the Botanical Garden to see how much is blooming already after so much and early sunshine. I had to see the printer because I want to print some of my digital artworks in a numbered edition, and sell them on behalf of Kultuur-Fabriek. Half way it started to rain, and we are not used to that anymore in this part of the world ;) For YouTube quality see: from Kultuur-Fabriek

Valkenburg at the river Geul

An old town, dominated by the castle on top of the ridge. You see it when entering by train; the station as a fairy tale mansion. That is what Valkenburg wanted to be in the early last century; a refuge for tourists in a dedicated landscape, a romantic scenery for those to visit.

It is a short walk towards the town center, passing statues, and old belongings from a not even over past. A poem of the Limburgian poet Jan Hanlo: “ It was half five in the morning in April. I walked, and whistled the St. Louis Blues. But I whistled it my own way. And while whistling I thought: Should my whistle be as the song of a big thrush. And see, after some time my whistling of the St. Louis Blues was like the song of the big thrush: turdus viscivorus.”

Such old buildings slanting alongside the streets, the roads that lead the tourists, the visitors to all what the town has to offer; a pear tree grows spread up and along the wall, embraces the house and bewares it from falling.

The Geul, the river, cuts the center in two; people lived here for ages alongside the once stinking water, and it still smells on warm days, when the sun vaporizes, and also charming, romancing anyone who leans over, wonder about the sculptures on private bridges, greeting the fishermen in high boots trying to catch the trout that has its hunting ground here.

It is full of terraces; one can see where this village is still meant for: to please, and make sure you leave your money on food and drinks, and the countless attractions. But it is also a beautiful place as long as tourists are not fading the surroundings, not blocking the view at the mighty scenery of old and new, and mingle the sometimes almost faded commercial paintings; restored for nostalgic purposes.

Heaven on a quite day like this, when most chairs are still empty, no jams for the Cauberg, the holy Dutch mount of cycling. Here is too much to see for one day; to much Kitsch as cheap attractions, luring those who fall for it; one can still find the pearls that are still there. Just enjoy a day walking through Valkenburg at the Geul.
