History: This bridge was constructed in the 1930s and was captured intact by the German invaders on May 10th 1940. It also survived the Allied Forces' attempts to destroy it. About 10 Belgian soldiers died during the attacks.
Facts: The Vroenhoven bridge is a protected architectual monument and crosses the heavily used Albert channel at a height of over 30 meters and over nearly 70 meters in length.
In april 2007 construction work began on a new suspension bridge which replaced the first bridge in 2012. The main reason was to get rid of the "bottleneck" in the Albert channel, which is only 21 meters wide under the bridge and thus caused congestion for the ships. A small leisure port and new restaurant are build under the new bridge.
