WANDERBACH page 247

Finally he reaches the stony path through the mountains from where he saw the Wanderbach smoke. It is a bit easier now, but Tork crawls more then he goes. Up, to roll down at the other side.
He is exhausted and hardly notices that the path becomes wider, smoother and that he has to climb less.
At the end he falls down at the edge of the road. His last forces consumed and in this no-man’s-land rescue is not likely.

On the bench of a donkey-car a farmer dozes bended. The beast of burden knows the way. It is not needed to drive her.
Suddenly the donkey stops.
- ‘Rebellious bitch!’ the farmer growls and climbs from the bench. While he walks to the front he sees in the distance something dark on the road. He can’t see well in the twilight. It arouses his suspicion. There still live bandits in these mountains. Ruthless, poor people, that even see a rich man in a cottier. He knows some that are emptied by them and his freight is not without value, what makes him careful when he walks towards the dark bundle.
- ‘It’s a man!’ The farmer peers into the surrounding bushes, afraid for devils that arise from the ground, but there is nothing, and he shuffles tensed forward, one hand on the knife in his belt.
He is death; he thinks when he bends over the body. But as soon as he shakes a shoulder he hears a light moaning. The farmer straightens and runs back to the car where he grabs some oranges from the load. He walks back and slices the fruit above the mouth of the groaning man.
Tork sighs for pain when the corrosive juice sips between his burst lips, but it doesn’t bring him to awareness.
The farmer lifts him. Head and feet dangle rough when he carries him to the car.
