tandarts / dentist

Zomer blijft de hele winter door
Floot ik lente tussen getrokken tanden
tijdens de herfst van mijn leven
bloeide ik en bloedde
toen ik van de tandarts kwam

Summer stays all winter
Whistled spring between pulled teeth
during the autumn of my life
I flourished and bled
when I returned from the dentist

He shrugs. ‘I have the feeling that I know you; strange that I know your name...’ She smiles timid.
- ‘I am honored.’
Suddenly the duchess appears. She wants to return to her suite. ‘Not now, dear’, Tork reacts absent. ‘Do ask someone else tonight.’ Duchess’ eyes catch fire when she turns furious and pounding vanishes between the bystanders. With raised head she leaves the room immediately. Alone! She does need anyone if Tork wants to engage with that foolish wallflower. Wait and see!
Torks’ attention is totally for the girl. From where does he know her? How does he know her name? He has the feeling that he even knows her very well but how is this possible if she doesn’t remember him? He looks around confused. Did all these people leave! The excess of female beauty only interests him temperate. Pretty to look at! Beauty consumes easier, but now…… He rubs his forehead and has to admit that Gabi is beautiful. Whatever.....? She intrigues, even stronger: he is shocked and wants to be alone with her, yet he doesn’t know why. The ball will take till tomorrow morning, if he is present or not and that’s why he asks her to accompany him.
- ‘On deck it is more quite. Colder as well, but it’s a beautiful night. Do you have a coat?’ He stares at her bare feet while the girl shakes her head.
- ‘I only cause trouble, Lord’, she whispers shamefaced. The governess brings salvation when she lends Gabi her far too big tippet. Helpless the girl follows Tork and his merry jumping dog that is glad to leave the ballroom. No elevator; Tork wants to walk, keep moving, and chooses the spiral ascent in the ships’ center.

de bedelaar / the beggar

Wandelen door straten
met zonovergoten terrassen
en nergens plek voor mij
Heb ik mijn laatste cent verbeurd
opgesoepeerd en weet niet waar
ik mijn fooi verloren ben
ergens tussen hier en de helmstraat
kruiste ik de degens
en liep storm op een schild

Walking through streets
full of sunlit terraces
and nowhere room for me
Have I lost my last penny
used and I don’t know where
I spent my tip
somewhere between here and the helmet street
I crossed the daggers
and rushed upon a shield

WANDERBACH page 158

- ‘She believes we do’, he smiles.
- ‘And you?’
- ‘I? How shall I say? I feel liable.’ She nods.
- ‘You should marry a nice young girl. That will free you of such obligations so you can do what you want.’ Tork laughs.
- ‘Marry, I? Believe me: more free then this I can’t become. The duchess? Well; she doesn’t take that much time that it irritates or disturbs. After this journey I discharge myself of all duties and will do what I like most.’
- ‘Which is?’
- ‘Another expedition, together with the dog. Without servants, just Barg and me through no man’s land under a starry sky, with nothing but a small tent as shelter.’
- ‘That must be wonderful’; the woman fancies and stares silent in the front. ‘Without obligations; you have the richest life of us all.’ Suddenly she looks at him.
- ‘Yet I want to introduce you to someone. I met her by accident today. She is young, beautiful, sweet but above all: modest.’ She takes Tork to a corner of the ballroom where it is as dusk as Barg meant. With her back against the wall stands a young woman in a short white dress on bare feet. The blond curly head shyly bend.
- ‘Gabi!’, Tork cries surprised. The girl lifts her head timid.
- ‘Do you know me, Lord?’
- ‘Yes, I…I, I don’t know. Do we know each other? Your name is Gabi, isn’t it?’ She nods.
- ‘Don’t you know me then?’ She shakes her head desperate. Tork falls prey to confusion.

- ‘Zij vindt van wel’, glimlacht hij.
- ‘En u?’
- ‘Ik? Hoe zal ik het zeggen. Ik voel me verplicht.’
- ‘Gabi!’, roept Tork verrast. Het meisje tilt schuchter haar hoofd op.
- ‘Kent u mij, Heer?’
- ‘Ja, ik…ik, ik weet niet. Kennen wij elkaar? Je heet toch Gabi, niet?’ Ze knikt.
- ‘Ken jij mij dan niet?’ Ze schudt vertwijfeld haar hoofd. Tork is ten prooi aan verwarring.

levenssleutel / key to life

Wist ik maar wat schrijven
of inspiratie in mijn hoofd
mijn hart, mijn leden
Heb ik mijn lijf teveel beloofd
of faalt energie?
welke mij ooit liet drijven
op gestage stroom
van droom en daad
van meesterlijk voelen
hoe het met mijn leven staat...

Did I know what writing
or inspiration in my head
my heart, my limbs
Have I promised my body too much
or does energy fail?
that let me ever float
on steady stream
of dream and deed
of brilliant feeling
how moves on my life...

WANDERBACH page 157

The duchess enjoys the jealous looks while she dances with the host as if she owns him and rubs her soft body against his. Tork sighs because he knows what follows. After the dance, during which she leaves her fragrance brand like a cat to have other ladies think twice, she lets him free and will reclaim him only as soon as she wants to return to her suite. Not that they have an affair, even if most guests are convinced of it in the mean time.
After the dance he takes leave with a short curtsy. She smiles complaisant. Except some platitudes they didn’t speak. Not more then a small affliction to let his past friend rest in peace and the duchess knows, but it seems that she plays her roll with even more vivacity just because of that.
After the opening dance the floor becomes crowded. The orchestra is relieved and up tempos. Tork watches amused. Hopefully he doesn’t have to dance anymore tonight but mostly his freedom is confined; and yet this is better then making the journey alone, he thinks when a firm lady with red apple cheeks gives notice. She is the wife of the governor, the governess like she calls herself jocular. Tork is fond of her, this woman of the countryside that never denies her origin, why the duchess calls her “that up cased farmers bitch”.
He offers his arm cheerful but the woman shakes her head. ‘I’m not begging for a dance’, she conspiratorially whispers. ‘I want to protect you. You don’t like dancing, isn’t it?’
- ‘Not like is too much. The obligation disturbs me. It’s all so little spontaneous and according to protocol. That I don’t like. In fact I’m just an ordinary guy yet this ship is mine. You will understand. We don’t differ that much.’ The woman smiles.
- ‘You are a strange chap, Tork. Do you really have an affair with the duchess?’

schrijven / writing

Schrijf ik over wat komt aanwaaien
of wat al langer mijn hersens spinde?
Het valt binnen
en vervolgens op papier
uit toetsen gedreven
op een of andere manier
van een geheugen in het ander
bewaard voor allemans oog
dat oordeelt en prijst
of verafschuwt
en kan het mij wat schelen
of doe ik het daarom?
Wat niet weet ook niet deert
zou mijn vader zeggen

Do I write about what comes up
or what already longer occupied my brains?
It falls inside
and then on paper
hammered from keys
one way or the other
from one memory into the next
kept for everybody’s eye
that judges or praises
or abominates
and do I care
or is it why I do?
What isn’t known doesn’t harm
as my father would say
and turns on his other side
in the grave I dug for him...

WANDERBACH page 156

- ‘Let me introduce Peter West, the writer. With the right attention I guarantee you will at least play a small part in his next book.’
- ‘Really?’
Happy with the solution Tork empties his glass and leaves together with the Wolfhound. Barg will accompany him to the ballroom, quite in a corner without risk being stepped on his tail. He doesn’t like it when Tork dances; the distance too big to interfere in time, but the duchess demands why they are on their way to the dim room where people turn around together. For Barg it seems quit troublesome if you need someone else to have four paws just to be able to whirl around without going crazy.
The dog exaggerates. Thanks to dozens of chandeliers the room bathes in fabulous light however where Barg is, that close to the floor, it will certainly be dusky.
Tork cannot enter unnoticed. All heads switch as on command into his direction. Some approach him, others keep a respectful distance and watch jealous those who dare to shake his hand or even kiss his cheek volatile. The host accepts released, shakes hands and kisses, modestly skims over some compliments.
Before he is halfway the duchess spots him. She is a young woman, not even thirty and most believe she is beautiful. For Torks’ taste she is too egotistic with an always arrogant expression on her puppet face. He would like to link her to someone else but promises causes debt and he offers his arm that she most self-evident accepts. So she strides next to him towards the middle of the room and the dance floor while the orchestra starts to play; a slow waltz as expected; always the same. Close against him she has herself lead with all time to look around and having admired herself in the flattering long evening dress.

- ‘Laat me je voorstellen.

wind

Binnen en buiten
binnestebuiten
totaal verkeerd om
zag ik het koren wuiven,
het trotseerde de harde wind
waarvan men zei
dat het de zomer zou waaien

Inside and outside
inside out
absolutely wrong
saw I wave the corn,
it challenged the hard wind
of which they said
that it would blow the summer

- ‘You’re welcome. Beautiful girls are pretty company during a long dull journey. Are you amusing yourself?’
- ‘Oh yes’, they giggle. ‘There aren’t many men aboard. Is this because you want us all for yourself?’ Tork laughs.
- ‘Don’t think too far. There weren’t more interested which I don’t mind, I rather see women then men.’, and again he is treated to giggle.
- ‘We like it to keep you company.’
- ‘Thanks, but the duchess demands a lot of my time; she asked again to dance tonight and she knows that I can’t refuse.’
- ‘Why not; because she is royalty?’
- ‘The duke was a good friend and asked me to take care of her before he died. I gave my word and that I don’t break.’
- ‘Therefore it isn’t necessary to spend every minute with her?’
- ‘I don’t, but I didn’t yet see her today, why she has a right to my attention tonight.’
- ‘Gosh!’ one of them sneers. ‘Of course you didn’t. She was in her suite all day, and not alone: the first mate was with her.’
- ‘No gossip ladies; it’s good she amuses herself. She had a bad time.’ Both girls keep ashamed their mouth. At that moment a man enters the club who looks around and then walks resolute towards the bar.
- ‘Ah, Tork, I was looking for you. What do you think; do we visit a nice island somewhere on the way?’ The host shakes smiling the offered hand.
- ‘Sorry Peter, there are no nice islands on this route. Why, are you bored?’
- ‘Oh, that’s ok, but some variety never harms’ He stares interested at both girls.

- ‘Graag gedaan.
- ‘Wij willen u graag gezelschap houden.’

Sit I with a hole in my belly
correct stabbed and closed
in a hospital bed
surrounded by women
that make me even more helpless
Saw I their sorrow
of what was done to us
and could hardly move myself

WANDERBACH page 154

He is interrupted by the steward: ‘Excuse me sir, but the duchess asks if you want to give her the pleasure of the first dance.’ Tork smiles inside. He knows her all too well, so dominant and flirting, and imagines how she formulated the message: ‘Tell him that I demand the first dance tonight!’  He admires the messenger.
- ‘That’s all right.’ The steward can hardly suppress his joy; with a denial back to the duchess is unthinkable and he bends deep.
It’s starting to dawn when Tork leaves the deck and followed by the dog walks to the elevator. All deck chairs empty until tomorrow morning the first sun beams appear. He enters one of the bars, the one he prefers because of the jazz that is played day and night. The dog follows and the bartender nods.
- ‘As usual, sir?’
- ‘That’s fine, Henri’, and watches the man mixing acrobatically a cocktail. Like always it isn’t busy; some couples in dimmed alcoves; two girls at the bar who try to grab his attention smiling. Tork is in a good mood and asks polite what they want to drink.
- ‘Got some tan today?’ They laugh coquettish.
- ‘We didn’t thank you yet for allowing us to come along on your boat.’
- ‘Ship’, Tork adjusts. ‘A yacht and everything that’s bigger is called a ship. Boats are fishermen vessels, or small things like rowing boats. Besides you find a lot of boats with the marine. How big a frigate ever will be, there are always stubborn sailors that keep calling it a boat, but as soon as luxury is involved it’s called a ship.’ They stare with open mouth.
- ‘Ship’, both stammer. ‘Thanks anyhow.’

‘In elk geval bedankt.’

grafschrift / epitaph

Voortgedreven door het paardjargon
zit zij stil en kwijlt
De tanden in haar mond losgeslagen
van ouderdom
Kwam ik haar ooit tegen
op het kerkhof waar zij lag,
het breiwerk dat versteld deed staan
priemden de naalden als zerk omhoog
Waterde ik de fluitelier
die haar dromen torste
vol beladen en gebogen
onder het gewicht
van veel te veel herinneringen

Driven by the horse-jargon
she sits still and drools
The teeth in her mouth rampant
of old age
Did I meet her once
on the church-yard where she laid,
her knitting flabbergasted
needles stabbed upwards like a headstone
I watered the whistling
That carried her dreams
Full loaded and bended
Under the weight
Of much too many memories

WANDERBACH page 153

On the promenade deck he walks at ease to the bow where his table is. Everywhere are tanning guests in deck chairs: many young glistening women in the bright sun; in bikini or topless with woolly wiggling breasts as soon as they greet him when he passes. Tork doesn’t stop but walks straight to the table where a waiter in livery waits to pull out a chair after which he sheds a bottom of wine in a Cristal glass.
Tork takes the stalk between thumb and index finger, gets the glass by its foot and whirls to free the aroma that he inhales deep before bringing it almost tender to his lips. A tiny sip, a mouthful circulating, he savors the full ripe taste and nods to have the glass filled up.
- ‘Do you wish a cigar sir?’ Tork resigns polite, ‘Anything else, sir?’
- ‘No, thanks.’ The waiter bends and leaves, lets Tork enjoying alone while sipping from the wine and staring satisfied over the smooth sea. Absent-minded he pets the robust dog-head on his lap.
The meal is served exactly on time and is delicious tender, full of the natural flavors he likes so much. He chews slow and thoughtful, takes a sip now and then while the dog engorges fine cut meat from a bowl. Tork smiles. It mollifies, Bargs’ speedy moves as if he is afraid that it’s his last supper.
The waiter cleans the table, presents a cigar from which Tork cuts the tip with a gold cutter. The waiter lights it with a long matchstick and then leaves with a deep curtsy.
Tork instates easy in the low bucket seat and crosses his legs. The eyes half closed he thinks the situation over. Convenient to have everything at hand on his way to the Gods, because the journey takes long and comfort is no luxury.

de kar / the chariot

Zij lacht om blokken die stuiteren
van de kinderkar
terwijl de voerman even later
zijn zweep over haar rug legt
Zachtjes dommelt zij
en verrast
als ze aanspant om te trekken

She laughs because of the blocks that rebound
from the children chariot
while the carrier a bit later
lays his whip over her back
Smoothly she dozes
and surprises
when she yokes to pull

- ‘If we want to harm you it will happen. It’s easy for us to kick you and your dog overboard.’ The answer is not without logic. Together they can wound a couple perhaps if these creatures can be wounded, but in the end they will loose thanks to the numbers. Tork looks at the dog that stares at him with half opened and drowsy eyes.
- ‘Pay attention!’ Barg sharpens the ears and rises halfway.
While he observes the sea creature suspicious Tork lifts carefully one hand and places the round crown on his head. The effect is immediately and fantastic. The ring slides around the temples, adapts and fits seamless, follows each curve without pressing. He doesn’t have the feeling that something is around his head: such perfection! Fatigue disappears and he jumps up fit and well-rested. The dog besides him, head at his knee.
The steward bends: ‘What do you wish sir?’
- ‘Veal with sliced fresh scallions, a salad of South sea fruits and steamed saffron rice.’
- ‘Certainly sir. Shall I serve a half bottle of wine?’ Tork nods. ‘A Hermitage de Dieu ’89, as usual?’
- ‘Excellent.’
- ‘Where shall I serve it, sir?’
- ‘On the promenade deck. Place an umbrella next to the table; it bothers if the sun shines in the tableware.’
- ‘At your service sir. In half an hour, if you please?’
- ‘Bring the wine immediately, I will go upstairs now.’
The steward bends again and leaves.
Together with the dog Tork walks towards the elevator.

Between the bushes on a lump in the reed
are two hiding
Winged wild and untamed,
the courage in their shoes
steams and ages
till brown rice pudding with gold spoons
they lay and dream
that they ever may be young again

WANDERBACH page 151

Without feet or legs they pull themselves forward during which the flat bottom releases on the deck planks a chirping sound as from a sick bird. To move like this has to be tiresome what maybe explains why the bent stays inert together. They don’t remind of any known life form, and it’s strange that Barg hardly reacts; as if they don’t smell.
On the disappearing shore the farmers become smaller until they emerge with the yellow stripe of beach. Tork sits down with his back against the grate and prepares for a long and boring journey. The dog drows at his feet. Although worn out after two days without sleep, too little food and a rabid run, he dares not to rest. The sea creatures don’t reassure. Since his arrival no-one said anything after: ‘welcome aboard’, and Tork feels that it will be difficult: the dancing boat in combination with tormenting fatigue. He yawns all the time until his cheekbone muscles hurt and become numb finally. He feels his strength decrease and looks dreary at the creatures, asks himself with what they fill their time. Being blissfully inactive? Who cleaned the deck so neat?
Suddenly one of them turns in his direction and tows towards him.
- ‘The crown?’, he asks, high and airy whistling that, logically and anatomically should come out of his gaping mouth but seems to escape from under his flat body. Tork pulls the headband out of his shirt.
- ‘Put it on!’ Torks’ suspicion is immediately.
- ‘Why?’
- ‘The journey will be quicker.’
- ‘What is your plan?’ The monster shakes its enormous head.

Torks’ wantrouwen is onmiddellijk gewekt.
- ‘Waarom?’
- ‘Dan gaat de reis vlugger.’
- ‘Wat zijn jullie van plan?’ Het gedrocht schudt de kolossale kop.

verloren / lost

Verdwijn de lijk van mijn wagen
Mestvaalt beweegt
en loopt een blokje rond
tot het vierkant draait
Rechtoe rechtaan
zo die gaat
en niet terugkeert
voor altijd verloren

Disappear the body of my wagon
Dung heap moves
and walks around the block
until it turns square
Straight right, right on
so it goes
and not returns
for always lost

WANDERBACH page 150 (chapter 13)

As soon as Tork and his dog are aboard the bark starts off. The sails hang loose in the absent wind en yet the boat floats, or rather: drifts in the right direction in a higher speed then the gulf stream can explain.
The passenger assimilates the new environment. A clean wiped deck, everything competent stowed as if a storm is expected. The woodwork seems old and can use a brush, but the bark makes the solid and robust impression to challenge a hurricane.
Tork has no idea how long the journey will take and has no intention of asking the in the pit together clewing sea creatures. No-one seems to manage the boat and yet they navigate in a straight line from the shore to open water and the other side, as he hopes.
The headband is still hidden under his shirt and he wonders what to do with it. Payment for the way across, but as long no-one demands it he won’t give it to the creeps which are pirates according to Shaah. They don’t do much; sit in distorted positions together and look all like brothers that crawled out of the same hideous egg. Their stubby shapes reach bearly Torks’ loin. The most massive is their head with the overall dominating yawning mouth; bold as a picked chicken where even their color reminds of; eyes like pins points in the mass that seems to be modeled by children hands from sick clay. No visible nose or ears why it isn’t clear if they can smell, but with their hearing seems nothing wrong. No neck neither. The too large head seems powerful glued on the body from which a number of long grabbers extend that end in three fingers with which they hoof themselves.

herinnering / memory

Peuzen poezen stoeien
in mijn jas van leer
gescheurd oud zeer
en aandenken, souvenier
van herinneringen
toen het nog nieuw was
en poezen gatos heetten

Peuzen cats play
in my leather coat
ripped old ache
and memento, souvenir
of memories
when it was still new
and cats called gatos

WANDERBACH page 148 – 149 (end chapter 12)

Where can they go?
When he approaches the path to the Gods it points out that the bark is still at the same spot. Without hesitating he drives the stallion into the sea until the ground disappears under its hoofs. Then Tork slides into the water while Barg swims towards him.
He fights a way through the water and is almost at the ship when a rope ladder rolls down the hull. Tork grabs, waits for the dog and hoists it around his shoulders to climb upwards hand over hand where he is welcomed by the horrible sea creature.
- ‘Do you have the crown?’ Tork nods and the creature grins.
- ‘Welcome aboard.’
On the deck Tork turns around. Along the coast, at a safe distance from the water, the farmers drive their horses together. Sometimes one of them rises cursing a fist and gesticulates angry in his direction.

verlangen / desire

Meisje met hond
wandelt met haar mee
aan de leiband
onder haar rok
die over de grond sleept
en het pad effent voor mij
terwijl ik haar volg
De bosjes aan weerskanten
fluisteren overmoed
en onverlangen
naar wat niet was
en nog minder komen kan

Girl with dog
walks with her
at a leash
under her skirt
that drags over the ground
and smoothes the path for me
while I follow her
The bushes at both sides
whisper hubris
and none-desire
to what wasn’t
and even less can come

WANDERBACH page 147

Tork calculates his chances and observes a robust young stallion, the fierce leader of a small herd. The animal seems fast which is exactly what he needs.
Without thinking he runs towards the meadow, opens the gate and walks towards the horse to which he talks reassuring from a distance. The stallion stares curious, allows that he fondles the velvet nose and Tork grabs the mane, slings in one go on the unsaddled back. The stallion needs hardly stimulation, ramps and trots towards freedom, followed by its herd. Barg keeps distance, afraid of the pulverizing hoofs, but Tork doesn’t mind the dog that can take care of itself very well. Barg follows wherever he goes.
The farmers stand motionless, stare with open mouth at the unexpected. In stead of one man and one dog confronted with a herd rushing horses and what Tork hoped for happens: the farmers give in. They can’t do anything if they don’t want to wound their own animals. Protected by the herd he passes storming while the dog follows in a vast arch. Tork looks over his shoulder. The men spurt confused to all sides, run towards a next meadow and start the chase.
The vantage is not big but the stallion is fast and the unsaddled herd follows with ease. His fear is to be overhauled or that in a distance more farmers will wait. One and a half day by foot: horses will cover that distance in less than half. It’s just a matter of keeping up the speed.
Strange enough they aren’t blocked a second time. There are people in the fields, bended backs, that don’t even look up when they pass. The chasers don’t come nearer, the distance stays the same, but what Tork alarms is that the farmers obstinate keep following, even past the empires border.
